What do students learn in PE in Key Stage 3?

In Pe, we aim to promote “exercise for life” and the contribution that sport and regular physical activity can have to a healthy lifestyle and positive mental and social wellbeing. Students learn about the fundamental basics required at KS4 exam Pe- including: (These are taught through a variety of different sports.)

  • Components of fitness
  • Fitness testing/ Methods of training
  • Principles of training
  • Sports leadership and coaching

How do students learn in KS3 PE? Students learn in the following ways:

  1. Appreciate and enjoy moving and achieving in physical activity.
  2. Develop competence and confidence in a broad range of physical skills.
  3. Understand and appreciate a range of different kinds of physical activity including sports, gymnastics/ trampolining and outdoor adventure activities. These may be delivered through core Pe or through the availability of extracurricular clubs.
  4. Take a pride in the confident, controlled and skilful use of the body.
  5. Be creative and inventive within the aesthetic aspects of the subject.
  6. Be able to take part effectively on their own, with partners and in groups, in both competitive and co-operative situations.
  7. Select, practice and improve, to set their own goals and make sensible decisions about their participation in physical activity – which activity and at what level
  8. Value safety codes, minimise risk, avoid danger and respond appropriately, when necessary, to emergency situations
  9. Decide on the most appropriate role for them to play – as performer, spectator, official or group leader.
  10. Recognise, understand, appreciate and comment on good and bad performance.
  11. Learn to cope responsively with success and failure: physical education can provide an alternative platform for success for those pupils who may not find it in the academic.
  12. Value the contribution which physical education and exercise can make towards their health, well-being and life-style.
  13. Understand and appreciate the importance of valuing the contributions of others, whether male or female, whatever the level of ability or social and cultural background.
  14. Appreciate the importance of fair play and of abiding by the rules and codes of conduct in all activities
  15. Become involved in activities which are socially valued, worthwhile and contribute to young people’s development into responsible and sensitive adults.
  16. Develop relevant skills, knowledge and understanding for future purposeful use of their leisure time.

How are students assessed in KS3 PE?

Students are assessed twice per half term in a variety of the following ways: (depending on sport/ weather and facilities)

  • By teacher through physical performance.
  • By teacher through verbal questioning on skills/ tactics and strategies.
  • Through leading warm ups/ practices/ games.
  • Through officiating.
  • Through peer assessment and evaluating the performance of themselves and others.
  • Through an online test based around components of fitness.

Home Learning

Home learning is not set in Pe at Paulet. We encourage students to join in one of our extra curricular clubs.

Extra-curricular opportunities

  • A wide variety of clubs are offered throughout the school year, such as football, netball, badminton, basketball and rounders.
  • Our out-of-hours learning programme is varied to include competitive and non-competitive  and team- and individual-based clubs.

How are careers linked to PE in KS3?

Students are signposted to KS4 exam PE throughout KS3 and then the potential pathways that this may lead to post 16. Jobs and careers are linked throughout to different sports (eg- performance analyst in Football)
