Paulet High School, Stapenhill Students went to help a person who had collapsed in Stapenhill Gardens Andrew Demidenko, Ben Belcher, Armando Bogdanov

Youngsters who rushed to the aid of two different pensioners who were found injured in Burton have been praised.

Earlier this month, four pupils from Paulet High School in Violet Way, Molly Bannister, Nicole Liney, Nikita Vasiljeus and Elvis Veinbergs, found an injured man in Burton. They rang an ambulance and helped to bandage him up.

And earlier this week, three different pupils from the school were first on the scene after a 69-year-old woman collapsed in Stapenhill Gardens.

Despite the best efforts of the children, aged between 13 and 14, both the pensioners they helped later died.

Armando said: “It was confusing at first, as it was raining and we were not really sure what or who it was but we decided to go over. Then we saw her – we felt it was our responsibility to do something.”

The trio, along with another member of the public, waited for an ambulance to arrive and put the lady in the recovery position.

Ben then got the lady’s dog under control. He said: “It could be someone in your family who has collapsed and you would help out – it was our responsibility as were the only ones there and if we didn’t help, she may have laid there for a long time. You would help anyone.”

Headteacher at Paulet, Ian McArthur, told the Mail that his pupil’s actions had left him feeling ‘very proud’. He said: “Too often young people get criticised but these youngsters have shown that young people can be selfless and courageous. I am very proud of these students, but they could be young people from anywhere and I’d like to think that they did what any good and caring citizen would do.

“We do a lot about caring for others and that is what they did. Ben keeps telling me that he feels he should have done more, but he was there and she would have had some comfort from that.

“Schools are more than about GCSE and A-Level results, it’s about helping the pupils to become a good person.”
